I read this in the newspaper a few months back.
I dont know if they shouldve stopped at Merced though. There's so many labs in Riverside/San Bernardino counties etc..

I don't know if this one is true, but it makes a good story and the California Bear flag reminded me of it. According to a US National Park Service Ranger around a campfire in Yosemite a few summers ago, the California Grizzly was hunted to extinction because its fat made the best pie crust.
And I have a hard time believing that the world gets 80% of its speed from California labs. There's huge demand for crank all over the world. I can't see that being met by just one place. The speed business is international from what I've heard. -
